What happens when a counterbalance forklift arrives at Relevator?
We always start by cleaning it. The counterbalance forklift is blown clean and washed on the outside before we proceed with inspections and functional tests. The inspection follows our inspection protocol, in which we document the forklift’s condition and any issues. Once the inspections and repairs are complete, we take photos of the counterbalance forklift and list it for sale.
How do we inspect the forks and chains on a counterbalance forklift?
The forks are inspected for cracks and wear. They are designed to support the load during every lift, so any damage must be detected and assessed before sale. We also inspect the lifting chains to check their condition and tension. A chain that is too tight can be damaged. That is why we examine both the appearance of the chains and their tension.

How do we check the condition of the tires?
The tires are the part where Rasmus most often finds wear on used counterbalance forklifts. We inspect them for major cracks and assess their level of wear. On tires with tread, we also check the tread pattern. Our findings are taken into account when determining what repairs the counterbalance forklift needs before it is sold.
How do we test drive a used counterbalance forklift?
We operate the counterbalance forklift, test a hard braking maneuver, and turn the steering wheel to its full limit in both directions. The forks are raised all the way up, and all hydraulic functions are tested. We also check that the rollers and guide rails are running properly. If the counterbalance forklift has a side shift feature, which allows the forks to be moved sideways, we test that as well.
During the test drive, we get a sense of how the forklift performs in actual use. For example, sluggish steering or hydraulics that aren’t working properly can be signs that something needs to be investigated further. This could be due to a low oil level or a hydraulic pump that’s starting to fail.
How do we evaluate the battery in an electric counterbalance forklift?
We check the battery’s age and condition and assess how well it has been maintained. For batteries that require water top-offs, it is important that this has been done regularly. For batteries with liquid electrolyte, we also measure the specific gravity. This measurement provides an indication of the battery’s condition and is included in our assessment along with other checks. Of course, it does not, on its own, indicate the battery’s full capacity. If the battery is in too poor a condition, we replace it before sale. This is a procedure that Rasmus has performed on counterbalance forklifts that have been brought to us. What do we check on a diesel-powered counterbalance forklift?
On a diesel-powered counterbalance forklift, we'll go through that are available. We verify the information regarding completed service and when the next service is due. The counterbalance forklift is test-driven, and its functions are tested according to our inspection protocol. The service records and the functional test together form part of the basis for assessing the condition of the forklift.
What information do you receive about operating hours and previous service?
We always check the counterbalance forklift’s operating hours and review the available service documentation. Previous service records are included when available. For you as the buyer, this provides a clearer picture of the forklift’s usage and maintenance. You’ll also receive information to help you plan future service.

What happens if we find defects or signs of wear and tear?
We’ll then assess what needs to be fixed. It could be, for example, a bad battery or a worn seat cushion that needs to be replaced. At Relevator, we recently received a counterbalance forklift with a broken windshield that had to be replaced before it was resold. On another forklift, the battery needed to be replaced. If there are any issues, we document them and inform you before the purchase. That way, you’ll know what we’ve found and can take it into account when choosing a counterbalance forklift.
What information do you receive before purchasing a used counterbalance forklift?
The results of the inspection are documented in the inspection report. It includes information about the condition of the counterbalance forklift and any notes. Photos, operating hours, and available service records supplement the report. We want you to have a clear picture of the used counterbalance forklift you’re considering purchasing.
